Sounds of Europe
15th October 2012
Xiafen Li reading ‘ Song of my Cottage Unroofed by Autumn Gales’ in Mandarin.
For the 6th year the School celebrated the European Day of Language on 5 October with Poetry readings by Staff, students and guests in a number of languages, including, Ancient Greek, French, German, Mandarin, Tamil and Welsh. Each year there is a theme for the readings from the Commission and this year it was ‘Community’. The School was pleased to welcome the contribution from the Confucius Institute as well as the return to the School of John Evans an alumnus now working for the European Commission in Brussels who read a poem in Welsh and gave a short presentation on the work of the European Commission.
The School was very pleased to welcome Xueyi Fu, Director of the Confucius Institute and her colleague Xiafen Li who read for us ‘ Song of my Cottage Unroofed by Autumn Gales’ by Du Fu in Mandarin. The School looks forward to working with the Institute in the future and to our extending the BA Translation into the area of Mandarin and other languages.
Sounds of Europe has now become an established annual event and we thank all participants and members of the audience who made it a memorable evening.
