The International Maritime Organization (IMO) is the only major international organization in the UK. It aims at regulating international shipping and the maritime environment. More recently the IMO has also turned to issues of international security and develops responses to maritime threats such as contemporary piracy. In this talk Hartmut Hesse provides first hand insights into the work of the IMO. Drawing on 22 years of experience in working for the organization, he will offer his observations and ideas where the IMO can make a difference. He will especially focus on the role of the IMO in improving maritime security and its contribution to the international fight against piracy.
