Book Kernel at Cardiff Digital Week 2013
Date: 24 to 27 June 2013
Making a book in a day
Cardiff School of European Languages, Translation and Politics is pleased to be involved in Digital Cardiff Week, exploring the digital future of the Welsh creative industries
New start-up, Hodcha, will be putting their event-publishing service - Book Kernel – through its paces at Cardiff Digital Week on Monday 24 June 2013. Book Kernel is a unique service that enables users to create a book based on a live event, print and deliver it to the venue before it has even ended. The Hodcha team will be creating an online book from the day’s activities bringing together a range of media from photographs, tweets and discussions to further commentary from participants.
Book Kernel is based on a content management system that can be used to document an event and pull together various media into a book form. Then it is transformed into an e-book for delegates to download or into a printed book to be delivered on the day. EUROP was instrumental in developing the system, and trialled the system at an international event in Swansea, celebrating the Welsh Poet – Dylan Thomas. Go to - #dteyes to see the reaction the event-based books produced for this international audience. The system is in its early stage of development and funded through the Arts & Humanities Research Council as part of the REACT Books & Print Sandbox based at the Watershed in Bristol. Hodcha partnered with Cardiff University as part of REACT’s Sandbox’s exploration into the future of publishing. Hodcha are working to further develop the Book Kernel system to allow participating audiences to select their own material and collate their own version of events.
Book Kernel at Cardiff Digital Week is sponsored by Cardiff University
