How to Apply
Applicants from all backgrounds – including non-conventional and overseas applicants – are welcome to apply to study Modern Foreign Languages, Translation, Politics or Internatioanl Relaions and Politics at Cardiff University. Applications are normally made through the UK’s centralised Universities and Colleges Admissions Service (UCAS) System.
We do not alter our admissions requirements for applicants resitting examinations. We give equal weight to first-time exams and exam resits. Individual offers made to applicants may vary according to the applicant’s individual academic profile. We judge each application on its merit, and treat them ‘holistically’, meaning we take all relevant factors into account when making decisions about admissions. We do not treat applications mechanically, but look for a balance of factors that suggest strong potential and aptitude for our degree programmes. We regret that we do not accept AS and A-level General Studies as one of your A or AS level qualifications.
What are the entry requirements?
Applications are considered from candidates with a range of qualifications, including A-Levels and the International Baccalaureate.
We accept the Welsh Baccalaureate Advanced Diploma. If you are taking the Welsh Baccalaureate Advanced Diploma and we make you an offer, the offer will be based on a pass in the Core and two specified A-Level grades.

Can I study a language from beginner level?
Applicants who have not studied the language previously are welcome on the German, Spanish and Italian degree programmes. In this case, Grade B or above at A2-level in an other foreign language is required. This requirement can be replaced by other forms of previous engagement in the study of a foreign language at the same level, to be assessed on a case by case basis.
