Translation Studies
Europe cannot ignore the necessity of translation both within its own evolution
and in its links to other cultures in a globalised world. The Translation degrees we offer are aimed at students seeking a career as a translator (public and private sectors) or interested in the study of translation as
a basis from which to pursue a PhD in such disciplines as translation studies, comparative literature, cultural studies or history.
Training in translation will also prepare students for careers in other language-related professions, including journalism, public relations or language teaching.
Undergraduate
Our staff teaching on a wide range of undergraduate language programmes at undergraduate level as well as in the field of translation. In 2012 we will be offering our exciting new BA Translation programme is aimed at applicants studying Modern European Foreign Languages, Japanese and Welsh (with other languages to follow). Students would study two languages + General Translation, Specialised Translation, Theory of translation, Professional Translation, Optional Cultural modules.
Postgraduate
Our innovative MA Translation Studies programme allows students to translate from any language to any language and has attracted students working in Arabic, Greek, Kurdish, Polish, Rumanian, Swedish and the Chinese languages as well as in French, German, Italian and Spanish. Student numbers have increased each year with a large international cohort that contributes to the dynamic and challenging programme. Students have gone on to work as professional translators and to work in the EU and with the European Criminal Court.
The MA has led to a growth in PhD students working in fields as varied as Translation pedagogy, Philosophy of translation, and Interpreting studies. Research activity has led to the creation of the Cardiff Research Group on Politics of translating. Translation has also enabled the School to engage with the wider community in Cardiff and further afield with events such as the annual Sounds of Europe poetry readings, visits from the Directorate General of Translation and the Minister for Europe as well as different poetry translation workshops and the Trans-poetry website, recording many of those activities, will soon be launched.
