Hispanic Studies

The Hispanic Studies teaches one of the major languages of the world: Spanish is currently spoken by around 400 million people in more than 20 countries around the globe. Our staff research and teach a wide range of topics related to the Hispanic world in an inter-disciplinary environment.

In the last ten years we have almost doubled our student intake. This has been for many reasons. Students express high satisfaction levels with our teaching and we guarantee that language classes will be taught by native speakers.

We have developed our Spanish modular degree schemes to satisfy the needs and demands of students pursuing a variety of degree programmes. Our teaching caters for both beginners and those who already possess A-Level or AS-Level Spanish. Beginners follow an intensive language programme designed to help them achieve sound reading, writing, oral and aural skills as quickly as possible; the language teaching for students with A/AS level qualifications helps consolidate and perfect existing linguistic skills.

The Spanish language skills acquired or polished at Cardiff will be essential for studying distinctive aspects of mostly 20th- and 21st-century history, society and culture of the Hispanic world. Most of these content modules have a strong focus on literature and film.

All students spend at least one semester of their third year in Spain or another Spanish-speaking country.

Expressive of the cultural and linguistic diversity within Spain, at Cardiff we also offer courses on both Catalan language and society.

Staff in the Hispanic Studies are actively involved in research in a wide range of topics relating to Spain and Latin America.
