International Students

The University has a long tradition of welcoming postgraduate research students from overseas. There are currently around 3000 international students from more than 100 countries represented on campus.
Before leaving home
Once you have received an offer to study at Cardiff University, you will receive advice on matters including immigration, visas, healthcare, climate and living and studying in Cardiff. The UK Council for Overseas Student Affairs also provides useful information regarding immigration requirements and advice on a range of welfare issues.
Accommodation
Cardiff is one of few universities that can provide university accommodation for all single international students throughout the duration of their degree programme, in a variety of high quality student residences.
English language requirements
If English is not your first language, you must have a standard of spoken and written English which will enable you to conduct your research at Cardiff School of Engineering and write academic papers and your thesis effectively.
We would normally expect candidates to have a minimum IELTS score of 6.5+ and/or TOEFL score of 600+. You may have a different recognised English language qualification; if so, you can provide details of this when you apply.
Cardiff University runs an English Language Service, providing English language courses for international students who are studying or intend to study at Cardiff University. Courses are available throughout the year, including intensive Pre-Sessional Programmes in English for Academic Purposes, which offer the opportunity to take the IELTS exam if you wish, or to improve on your current score.
