Research Degrees

Research Degree Programmes

Cardiff School of Engineering offers a range of PhD, MD and MPhil degrees, on a full or part time basis, across the core disciplines of civil, electrical, electronic, mechanical and manufacturing engineering.. As a partner in the Engineering Doctorate Centre in Steel Technology, the School also supports candidates for the Engineering Doctorate (EngD) award.

Research Areas

Research activities in the School take place within six multidisciplinary research institutes which cover most of the major research areas across engineering. Students work in some of the best research facilities and receive supervision from internationally renowned research staff. The School is widely recognised as a leading centre for engineering research, with over 95 per cent of our staff involved in nationally or internationally renowned work. This means that research students within the department are often supervised by academics who are active in cutting-edge research and are highly regarded in their field.

In recent years, more than £30 million has been invested in the construction of the Queen's Buildings, home to the School of Engineering and the Schools of Physics and Computer Science. The complex is close to other academic departments, the Students' Union and the City Centre. It houses outstanding facilities including spacious and well-equipped teaching and research laboratories. There is also an on-site library containing a broad range of books and journals, the latest computer and CD ROM reference media and quiet areas for study.

Research Supporting Studies

Monitored Professional Development Scheme

The Monitored Professional Development Scheme (MPDS) is the preferred, approved and quality controlled route for graduate engineers to complete their initial professional development, become members of the relevant professional Institution and register with the Engineering Council as a Chartered Engineer.

The MPDS at Cardiff has been designed to ensure our graduate engineers have the opportunity to develop the necessary technical and business competence, innovation and interpersonal skills required to achieve a successful application for CEng based on their initial degree and any previous experience in addition to the skills they develop whilst carrying out their research degree. Participants on the scheme are assigned a Chartered Engineer as a mentor at the start of the programme. This mentor assists them to achieve the competencies required for CEng status by setting and reviewing objectives. This is achieved by regular meetings with the mentor to discuss and plan progress based on detailed reports of their experiences every three months. At the end of each year mentors and participants work together to assess current engineering competencies. When they are able to demonstrate all the competencies required participants are able to apply for Chartered status with advice again provided by the mentor on completing the necessary application and opportunities for mock interviews.
