TRANSLATIONS OF ENGLISH
NOVELS, 1770–1829
Caspar Wintermans
When in 1801 an anonymous Dutch author published
a novel called Dolozetta, of de belaagde deugd (Dolozetta,
or Virtue Beset ), he, or she, proclaimed on its
title page that the book had not been translated. Translations,
mostly from the German, dominated the fiction-market in The
Netherlands at the time; and the recent publication of The
English Novel, 1770–1829: A Bibliographical Survey of Prose
Fiction Published in the British Isles, 2 vols. (Oxford:
OUP, 2000) induced me to compile a list—which does
not pretend to be exhaustive—of Dutch translations of English
works of fiction which saw the light of day during this period.
The following
sources were used:
 Naamlijst
van uitgekomen boeken, kaarten, prentwerken enzovoorts,
a survey of books published in Holland. Vols. 1–6, which
cover the years 1790–1818, were issued by S. de Visser in
The Hague; vols. 7–9, which cover the years 1819–1833, were
issued by C. L. Schleijer at Amsterdam.

De
Nederlandse Centrale Catalogus (The Dutch Central Catalogue).
A great many novels
were not translated from the English original, but from French
or German versions. Sometimes the title page acknowledges
as much, but there were also publishers who pretended that
the ‘Ur-Text’ had been used, whereas the Dutch title makes
it abundantly clear that this was simply not true. The Dutch
translation of Mary Brunton’s Discipline (1814:14)
is a case in point.
It may seem odd
that some famous works—Ann Radcliffe’s Romance of the Forest,
for instance—evidently did not make their appearance in Dutch
garb; but then lovers of literature also read English novels
in the original. This is shown by the advertisement that the
publisher of Dolozetta, Wouter Bave from Amsterdam,
appended at the end of this novel: among the books he offered
for sale may be found Regina Maria Roche’s Vicar of Lansdowne;
or, Country Quarters (1789), the anonymous Midsummer
Eve; or, the Country Wake (1800) and Maria Lavinia Smith’s
The Fugitive of the Forest (1801).
It will be remembered
that M. G. Lewis penned The Monk during a stay
at The Hague, a town which he found exceedingly dull. That
his romance was not translated into Dutch until 1968, would
not have surprised him. The Dutch were rather prudish at the
time; didactic fiction held its sway; and it was not just
the critics who disapproved of sensationalist fiction; even
those who translated Gothic yarns thought it wise to tone
the original down! Thus the third volume of De verschijningen
op het kasteel der alpen gelegen in de Pyreneën (1820),
a translation of Catherine Cuthbertson’s Romance of the
Pyrenees (1803) which was ascribed to Ann Radcliffe, contains
the following note: ‘As the details of the horrible parricide
and the shocking scenes of Elvira’s pretended despair are,
in the original, terribly repulsive, we decided to consider
the delicate feelings of our readers by abridging these frightful
scenes, copying only the essentials.’ (p. 184)
To the best of
my knowledge, only one copy of this amusing four-decker has
survived. Indeed, it is much to be regretted that so many
of the books in the following list seem to have disappeared
without trace …

Burney seems not to be the real author. Among the book’s characters
we find: Miss Clarke, Miss Dalton, Miss Plunket and Lord Sutton.

*An epistolary novel. According to the catalogue of the Royal
Library, the original, entitled Julia St. Laurence, was
published in 1789. The title page proclaims that the book was
translated from the English, but it seems far more likely that
a German edition, published at Leipzig by J. Sommer in 1797,
and also attributed to Mary Robinson, was used. Among the book’s
characters we find: Lady Seymour, Mrs Emilia Vernon, Lord Allford
and Edward Howard.

‘Het kasteel der gastvrijheid, of het spook’ is ‘The Provençal
Tale’, from Ann Radcliffe’s The Mysteries of Udolpho, a Romance
(London, G. G. & J. Robinson, 1794), vol. 4, chapter
