The Grants Register: A Complete Guide to Postgraduate Funding Worldwide

Student ImageThis is the most authoritative and comprehensive guide available to postgraduate grants and professional funding worldwide. For twenty-five years The Grants Register has been the leading source for accurate and up-to-date information on the availability of, and eligibility for, postgraduate and professional awards.

With details of around 3,700 awards, The Grants Register is more extensive than any comparable publication. Each entry has been verified by the awarding bodies concerned ensuring that every piece of information is accurate. As all information is updated annually, each edition also provides the most current details available today.

The Grants Register is available in all UK University Careers Services, including the Cardiff University Careers Service.

A copy of the Grants Register is available from the Careers Service Reference Library, which is located at 5 Corbett Road, Cardiff, CF10 3EB. The Library is open Monday to Friday from 9.00am – 5.00pm throughout the year (though during vacations opening times can vary).

Teaching opportunities for postgraduate students

All PhD students after their first year are eligible to apply for a position as a Postgraduate Tutor with responsibility for teaching Year One undergraduate students. The role involves providing a weekly tutorial intended to provide a space for discussion and clarification of the topics presented in the lectures.  Each tutor group consists of 13 or 14 students.  Tutors are also expected to mark exam scripts, to set a choice of essays for each module, mark the essays and provide feedback to individual students. As well as providing an extra source of income, gaining employment as a year one tutor will enable you to develop teaching skills and boost your CV.

Loans

Career Development Loans (CDL) are the most common loans for postgraduates, but they are only available to UK and EU students.  You can apply for a CDL with Barclays, The Co-operative Bank and The Royal Bank of Scotland.   It is a deferred repayment bank loan which provides you with initial help to pay for vocational education or training. You can borrow between £300 and £8000, to pay for up to 80% of course fees, plus the full costs of books, materials and other related expenses. If you have been out of work for 3 months or longer you may be able to apply for 100% of the course fees.  The Learning and Skills Council pays the interest on your loan while you are learning and for one month after the course ends.  You repay the loan to the bank over an agreed period at a fixed rate of interest.
