Research

Clea works in moral psychology which means she is interested in the psychological assumptions involved in ethical theory; whether these assumptions are true of human beings; and how an understanding of human psychology should inform thinking about ethics.

Clea's current research reflects ongoing interests in moral development and agency, the proper role of emotion in ethical reflection and autonomy, and the connexions between applied, normative and meta-ethics. Current projects include a defence of the claim that aiming at moral perfection is morally problematic; an account of automatic virtuous actions which takes the automatic activation of goals as essential to virtue; and an exploration of the ethical importance of self-fracture and disunity.

Biography

Clea read Mathematics and Philosophy as an undergraduate at Jesus College, Oxford before taking up a fellowship at University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill to do postgraduate work in Philosophy. She taught at Indiana University of Pennsylvania and for University of California at Berkeley and Santa Cruz. She is currently a Honorary Research Fellow and Lecturer in Philosophy (ENCAP), a tutor in the Centre for Lifelong Learning and Treasurer of the Royal Institute of Philosophy Cardiff Branch.
