Polar Marine Diatom Taxonomy and Ecology Workshop

22 Jan 2013

4th Polar Marine Diatom Taxonomy and Ecology Workshop

Cardiff University, 4th – 9th August 2013

The next Polar Marine Diatom Taxonomy and Ecology Workshop will be held in the School of Earth and Ocean Sciences, Cardiff University, from 4th – 9th August 2013.  This workshop is a continuation of three previous workshops held
in Yamagata, Japan (2005); Nebraska,
USA (2007); and Sydney, Australia (2011).

Workshop Aims

The workshop will provide the international community of polar diatom researchers with an opportunity to interact and discuss topical issues and new results that bear on recent and future research activities in the polar regions.  It will have a strong focus on the Neogene to Recent time period and taxonomic issues toward standardization of terminology and identifications – it will be interactive with many dedicated microscope sessions.  The workshop will allow students and early career researchers to interact with, and receive training and advice from leaders in the field and, as such, researchers at all stages of their careers are encouraged to attend.

In a nutshell, the workshop aims are to:

  • transfer sound taxonomic skills and exchange knowledge relative to modern and fossil diatoms of polar regions;
  • engage the international marine phytoplankton and palaeontological communities and raise the research profile and opportunity for on-going training of students and researchers.

The workshop supports the sound development of robust proxies for palaeoceanography, evolution of sea-ice communities, timing of climatic events in polar regions.

Timetable for Workshop Logistics

Late February 2013:   Registration will open with application procedures for attendance, accommodation and presentations to be found via this website.

Please note that registration is limited by available laboratory facilities so early registration is advised to avoid disappointment!

A number of travel grants for students have been applied for.  These will be advertised via this website as soon as the outcomes are known.

30th April 2013:           Registration will close.

May/June 2013:           Participants will receive relevant information for joining the workshop.

4th August 2013:         Workshop icebreaker – welcome to Cardiff!

5th – 9th August 2013:  Workshop science sessions

We hope to see you in Cardiff in August!
