Ernest Azzopardi awarded Unilever Prize

2 November 2011

Mr Ernest Azzopardi

Ernest Azzopardi, who was one of the first WCAT appointees (in Burns and Plastic Surgery in 2009), has recently been awarded the Unilever Prize at the Annual British Society for Oral and Dental Research Meeting held in Sheffield, which was presented at Cutlers' Hall in Sheffield.

Ernest is undertaking a full time PhD with Professor David Thomas and Dr Elaine Ferguson's Group at the School of Dentistry, as part of their research programme to develop novel antimicrobial therapies. The project is developing polymer-based therapies as novel treatment strategies for multi-drug resistant infections. Modification of toxic antibiotics via chemical linkage to biodegradable polymers allows the “customisation” of their release kinetics and targeted delivery in vivo

Ernest’s research has also been recognised by receipt of EU funding and also, in 2011, the Cardiff Medical Society’s All-Wales Research Registrar Prize and the  poster prize at the European Science Foundation meeting in Wittenberg, Germany.
