Alison Bullock, Professor and Director of CUREMeDE
Alison led the establishment of CUREMeDE in 2009. Her research interest is broadly concerned with the postgraduate education of health professionals and her specific fascination is with understanding how training makes a difference to workplace practice. She is an experienced project lead and has directed many research and development projects in postgraduate dental education in particular. She has conducted research using varied designs and methods but recognises that the choice of methodology is an important theoretical challenge. She has published in journals that are well regarded in their field including Intensive Care Medicine, Medical Education, Medical Teacher, Journal of Dental Education, British Dental Journal, European Journal of Dental Education and Oxford Review of Education. Alison regularly presents at national and international conferences and from July 2010 is President of the Education Research Group of the International Association of Dental Research. Her involvement in teaching is in the form of doctoral supervision and she contributes to research methods components of Cardiff University’s masters in medical education programme.

Suzanne Phillips, Research Associate
Suzanne joined CUREMeDE in April 2010. For several years she was based in the Wales Postgraduate Deanery (Cardiff University School of Postgraduate Medical and Dental Education). Her current main area of interest is the design and use of on-line surveys. She has undertaken survey evaluation for several medical specialty training committees, exploring doctors’ views of their training. Her move to CUREMeDE enables her to develop her application of social science to the training of health professionals in Wales.

Rebecca Dimond, Research Associate
Rebecca joined the CUREMeDE team in January 2013 to work on the iDoc project with Alison Bullock and Mark Stacey. Rebecca is a medical sociologist and her work at CUREMeDE involves exploring the intersection of information technology, patient care and professional socialisation. Her work builds on her previous research and studies exploring social aspects of medicine. Her PhD, completed in 2010, was a multi-sited ethnography on the social construction of a rare genetic disorder, 22q11 deletion syndrome (drawing on observation of clinical consultations and conferences, and interviews with families and health professionals). She has previously worked on several research projects at Cesagen (the ESRC Centre for Economic and Social Aspects of Genomics), exploring the implications of genetic disease for patients, families and professionals. The first focused on communication strategies of patients and carriers of haemophilia, and the second focused on the patient experience of mitochondrial disease in the context of emerging reproductive technologies. Rebecca gained an MSc in Social Science Research Methods whilst studying for her PhD and has a BSc and MA with the Open University.

Emma Barnes, Research Associate
Emma has several years’ teaching and research experience, with an interest in qualitative methods. Her previous studies have been concerned with subjective health and social care needs assessment and programme design and evaluation. These projects have taken a multidisciplinary mixed-method approach, focusing on topics such as service provision and milestones in the illness trajectory for children with life-limiting conditions, the links between abuse/trauma and adult problematic drug use in people attending a community drugs project and developing a trial platform to support ill 1990/1991 Gulf veterans achieve optimal health and well-being. Emma joined CUREMeDE in December 2010 and is collaborating with the Dental Postgraduate Section (PGMDE) on national and European projects to help inform dental CPD provision.
