National Science & Engineering Week 2013: "Learn about Life"
Maggot Racing Workshop
On Wednesday 20th March, during the National Science & Engineering Week, CITER Soc delivered a great "Maggot Racing" workshop in the Sir Martin Evans building to school pupils from a number of schools around Cardiff including Roath Park and Peterston Super Ely C.I.W. primary schools. The workshop consisted of 12 sessions, each lasting 15 minutes and the groups of 7-8 pupils rotated around a series of workshops. Around 90 pupils attended in total. The objective of the maggot workshop was to outline the clinical application of maggots in wound care and healing using a short poster presentation. This was followed by a fun, interactive maggot race, where each pupil in the group named a maggot and encouraged it towards the finish line. The owner of the winning maggot received a certificate. As well as the CITER Soc chairs, Elena Koudouna and Siân Morgan, other postgraduate volunteers included Dr Erin Dooley, Milly Phillips, Steven Gardner and Stacy Littlechild from the School of Optometry and Vision Sciences.
