Centre for Advanced Studies

The Centre for Advanced Studies (CASS) is an inter-disciplinary, social-sciences research facility of Cardiff University. It is located in Park Place, at the edge of Cathays Park, Cardiff's prestigious Civic Centre.

Established in 1993, the Centre is core-funded but generates most of its own funding to conduct research of an advanced nature. The Centre's mission is:
"To secure the resources to conduct research that is primarily inter-disciplinary, can be inter-institutional and may be international, the results of which advance both academic knowledge and practical action."

The rationale for this is to further the reputation for research excellence in the social sciences in Cardiff and, as appropriate, by virtue of the inter-institutional dimension, the wider social science research community in Wales.

The present fields of operation for the Centre include the following:

The site, at 44-45 Park Place, is capable of housing some 20 researchers and administrative support. IT facilities are extensive and the Centre has its own publication unit and electronic data archive. It also offers seminar space.
