Postgraduate Research

Cardiff School of Biosciences has a wide range of three and four year postgraduate research programmes as well as a one year MRes in Bioscience course. 

Research activity in the School spans the range of biology from whole (eco) systems to molecular biology and protein structure and postgraduate projects are undertaken in one of the four research divisions: Organisms and Environment, Pathophysiology and Repair, Molecular Biosciences and Neuroscience.

Entry requirement for MPhil/MD/PhDs:

First or upper second class UK Honours degree or equivalent. For the PhD programme this requirement may be waived for cnadidates with MSc or MPhil.

If English is not your first language we require one of the following English language qualifications (this is mostly for the Overseas and EU (non-UK) applicants:

  • IELTS 6.5, with a minimum of 5.5 in each element
  • TOEFL Paper Based Test = 580 with TWE of 4.0
  • TOEFL Computer Based Test = 237
  • TOEFL Internet Based Test = 90
  • GCSE/IGCSE grade C or above 
  • Pearson Test of English - Academic (PTE-A) = 62
  • International Baccalaureate Diploma (English Language at HL or SL) = Grade 5
  • Successful completion of Cardiff University's pre-sessional English language course of at least 8 weeks' duration with a minimum of IELTS 6.0 with minimum sub scores of 4.0 in each of the four skill areas at entry.

Starting date:

  • 1st October is the preferred start date for PhDs. However, 1st January, 1st April and 1st July are also acceptable.
