Solar Thermal Absorption Cooling Systems STACS

Absorption chillers have been used on a large scale for industrial cooling since the 1950's. Generally they are run using low-grade waste heat from industrial processes. However solar thermal panels can provide a suitable renewable source of heat which makes a domestic scale cooling system a viable proposition.

Currently no domestic scale solar thermal absorption chiller systems exist in Wales. The Solar Thermal Absorption Cooling Systems project, funded by the Welsh Energy Research Centre, involves the design, installation and performance monitoring of such a system, and will also assess the feasibility of such systems for the domestic sector in Wales.
