LCRI

The aim of the Low Carbon Research Institute (LCRI) is to create a virtual organisation that will change the landscape of the academic discipline of energy research in Wales. The LCRI will develop capacity and facilities around the existing areas of low carbon and energy expertise in Wales whilst being international in its outlook, developing a strategic long term programme of research.

LCRI will unite the considerable and diverse range of energy expertise throughout the Principality of Wales and will co-ordinate research, technology development/demonstration and transfer, to enable the Welsh Assembly Government (WAG) to deliver its Energy Policy, whilst promoting Wales collectively as an international showcase for sustainable low carbon energy technology. The Welsh School of Architecture are the lead partner in coordinating the application and administering funding with other partner Institutions' being Cardiff School of Engineering (Cardiff University), School of Chemistry (University of Wales Bangor), Sustainable Environment Research Centre (University of Glamorgan) and School of Engineering (University of Wales Swansea).

LCRI will attract and retain key researchers in the energy field, and to secure major national and international research funding, for example, from research councils, EU 7th Framework, DTI and Carbon Trust. Through its research the LCRI will raise the profile of, and encourage enhanced activities in, low carbon initiatives in Wales, working nationally and internationally to raise the profile of Wales as a leader of low carbon technologies. It will seek to achieve long term more affordable low carbon energy costs, use energy efficiently from different sources, reduce energy demand across all sectors, be less dependent on imported fuels and reduce climate change.
