Grants Awarded 2007

Each year the SCAN committee invites bids for the award of grants from £50-£200 and the successful bids are awarded their grants at the beginning of September. In 2007 the successful local causes were as follows:

Cardiff Conservation Volunteers

This group promotes the conservation, protection and improvement of the physical and natural environment by carrying out environmental tasks every weekend on a voluntary basis.  Over the years many staff and students from the University have participated in the work of CCV working in woodlands, nature reserves and for local councils. The £135 grant will be used for the printing and production of leaflets, brochures, posters and other advertising literature for the CCV.

Bobath Children’s Therapy Centre Wales

Bobath exists to improve the quality of life for all children throughout Wales who have cerebal palsy by the unique provision of Bobath therapy.  They provide therapy regardless of the severity of the disability and at no cost for the family. Bobath submitted a bid to purchase five items of specialist equipment for use during therapy sessions with younger children who have no stable seating ability. They were awarded £135.

Bobath are always looking for volunteers to help with bucket collections at various venues or to help staff a stall by selling merchandise at regional country shows and other venues.  If you would like to volunteer please visit:

Motor Neurone Disease Association – Cardiff & Vale of Glamorgan Branch

Motor Neurone Disease (MND) is the name given to a group of related diseases affecting the motor neurones (nerve cells) in the brain and spinal cord.  The cause of MND is unknown, there is no known cure and in the UK at least three people a day die from MND. The MND Association receives no financial support from the Government or any other statutory body therefore the Association is supported wholly from voluntary gifts and donations.  The SCAN grant of £170 will be used to cover costs of room hire and refreshments for future open meetings and events for MND sufferers and their families.

The Cardiff & Vale of Glamorgan Branch of the MND Association is always in need of volunteers to help out at weekend fundraising events such as street/store collections, sponsored walks etc.  For further information please visit:

Thrive Cardiff

Thrive is a local charity based in Cardiff catering for families that have children with special needs.  The group is organised and managed by parents of disabled children.  They offer the opportunity to meet on a social basis and take part in lots of different social activities.   Thrive meets every Saturday morning and afternoon at different venues in Cardiff and the £170 that SCAN awarded this charity will enable the group to purchase some musical instruments to be used by the children either on a free play basis or as part of a more organised music session for those children that are more interested.

Thrive is fortunate to already have Cardiff University students volunteering during the academic term however other volunteers are always welcome, particularly during the school holidays when the student volunteers tend not to be available. For further information please telephone: +44 (0)29 2054 0513.

Rebounders Special Needs Trampoline Club

Rebounders is a Cardiff based Charity providing trampolining for any child who is unable to attend a mainstream class. This may be due to coordination, concentration, learning or behavioural difficulties.  The Trampolines are difficult for some clients to climb on to the £170 will therefore be put towards the cost of purchasing a set of special needs reinforced foam trampoline steps.

Rebounders is always looking for volunteers to help out with the classes. This could include those interested in obtaining a special needs trampoline coaching qualification; those who would like to go in an spend time playing with the children whilst they await their turns on the trampoline; or those who would like to support some of their fundraising events by making cups of tea and coffee. For further information please telephone: +44 (0)29 2075 9196.

Clych Meithrin Pentrebaen

Clych Meithrin is a charity organised by local parents that provides an introduction to education through the medium of welsh for 2 ½ - 5 year olds. The aims of the meithrin are to provide a safe, enjoyable, inspiring environment for children to learn. The Pentrebaen meithrin is in a relatively socially disadvantaged area of Cardiff so this nursery will benefit from the £170 awarded to them to purchase a projector so the children can develop their IT skills in an innovative and inspiring way.

The nursery regularly holds fundraising events, for further information please telephone: +44 (0)7969 936778.

Bute Cottage Straw Bale House

The Bute Cottage Nursery is an Education Authority Nursery located in Penarth.  The nursery plans to construct a straw bale building for use with parents, pupils and outside agencies as a way of relieving pressure on the space in the Nursery.  The straw bale building will provide a tool for educating children and the wider community.  The SCAN fund awarded the nursery £170 to put towards the cost of employing and expert to carry out the lime rendering work to provide a finish to the straw bales.

The Nursery currently requires help to pack some of the tyres which will act as the foundation for the building.  All volunteers are welcome and they’d love to photograph them for their portfolio, to be publicised later when the project is complete.
